DEADLINE FOR ORDERS IS WED. DEC. 5TH
The Wanaque Police Department regularly takes reports of suspected identity theft and attempted frauds. Please use appropriate measures to protect yourself from these ever growing crimes. If you think you have been the victim of a fraud or identity theft immediately notify the Police Department and follow these steps:
What to do if you're a victim of fraud:
When you use a credit card, you can be vulnerable to fraud, whether you pay online, over the phone, or even in person at your neighborhood grocery store.
If you think you've been the victim of fraud or a scam,
immediately follow these steps. The faster you contact the proper authorities, the more likely you are to minimize the damage a scammer can do to your identity, your credit, and your bank account.
Step 1: Close any affected accounts.
Contact the genuine company or organization if you believe you've given sensitive information to an unknown source masquerading as that real company or organization. If you contact the real company immediately, they might be able to lessen the damage to you and others.
Then:
Speak with the security or fraud department about any fraudulently accessed or opened accounts at every bank or financial institution you deal with, including credit card companies, utilities, Internet service providers, and other organizations that have your personal information.
Follow up with a letter and save a copy for yourself. When you open new accounts use strong passwords, not passwords such as your mother's maiden name, along with a new account number.
Step 2: Change the passwords on all of your online accounts
When you change your passwords or open new accounts, use strong passwords.
Step 3: Place a fraud alert on your credit reports- In the United States, contact these three credit bureaus:
Equifax (800) 525-6285 / Experian (888) 397-3742 / TransUnion (800) 680-7289
For each of the credit bureaus:
Get a copy of your report (victims of ID theft can receive copies of their credit reports for free) and ask that no new credit be granted without your approval.
Make sure your account is flagged with a "fraud alert" tag and a "victim's statement," and insist that the alert remain active for the maximum of seven years.
Send these requests in writing and keep copies for yourself.
Review the reports carefully. Look for things like inquiries you didn't initiate, accounts you didn't open, and unexplained debts.
Step 4: Contact the proper authorities
Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
File a complaint. If you are a victim of any type of identity theft, you can report the theft by calling the FTC's toll-free Identity Theft Hotline at (877) ID-THEFT or (877) 438-4338. Counselors will advise you on how to deal with the credit-related problems that can result from identity theft.
Download and print the FTC's Identity Theft affidavit. Fill it out and send it to all the financial institutions at risk to help minimize your responsibility for any debts incurred by those who stole your identity. Your case will be entered in the FTC’s nationwide "Consumer Sentinel" database of ID theft cases, which helps law enforcement agencies find criminal patterns and catch the thieves.
File a report with your local police department. Get a copy of the police report to notify your bank, credit card company, and other creditors that you are a victim of a crime, not a credit abuser.
Step 5: Record and save everything.
As you complete all these steps to clear up the wrongdoing, always make print copies of documents for yourself, including e-mail messages, written correspondence, and records of telephone calls, and file them somewhere safe.
For telephone or in-person conversations, follow up with dated confirmation letters to the organization, and save a copy for yourself. State in the letter what was covered in the conversation, and list any follow-up items that you or the representative has committed to in the conversation.
With the leaves falling and curbside pickup beginning large piles of leaves are out at residents curbs. Please do not cover fire hydrants or block the view of drivers at intersections.
Children like to play in these large piles of leaves but please keep them out of piles that are on the roadway for their own safety.
REGISTRATION DEADLINES ARE CURRENTLY 21 DAYS PRIOR TO EACH ELECTION.
If you would like to become a registered voter, come to the Municipal Clerk’s Office for voter registration.

My first ten months as Mayor has been very rewarding and satisfying. Overall, our community is thriving, and we have many things to be thankful for going into the Holiday season.
The Haskell Towne Centre has officially opened for business. This is the cornerstone for the changes that were first envisioned ten years ago for the Haskell Business District. It is an impressive building, and fits in with the streetscape improvements on Ringwood Avenue. Over 80% of the building is rented, which far exceeds the norm for new commercial space. That alone is a positive sign for the vitality of our community. We are now looking to the south of Doty Road. The first step is a Redevelopment Study which is underway. The ultimate goal is to redevelop this entire area .We are also looking for funding to assist the property owners opposite the Haskell Towne Centre in upgrading the facades of their buildings.
We recently dedicated Hagstrom Field in honor of our late Mayor, Warren Hagstrom. The two baseball fields, soccer field, bathroom and parking lot are located on Warren Hagstrom Boulevard and were built by Pulte Homes as part of their contribution to our community. The field is just outside of the Wanaque Reserve by Del Webb. Warren was very involved in Little League and a great supporter of activities for the youth in Wanaque. We are all very happy to honor his memory in naming the field after Warren Hagstrom.
We have had several capital improvement projects going on over the summer and fall. Several streets were repaved, and the Whistler Place reconstruction will be finished by the middle of November, which is being funded by a $250,000 grant from the State. An $800,000 dam reinforcement project is being done at Rainbow Valley Lake. This work was ordered by the State of New Jersey. The lake was lowered by five feet for the work to be done, and will be refilled when the work is complete. Plans are being finalized for the reconstruction of Laura Avenue, using a $250,000 grant from the State. The first phase will be from George Street to Furnace Avenue. We have applied for another grant to complete the work. This work will be scheduled during the summer of 2008.
I have been told by the owners of the Holiday Inn Express site on Union Avenue that they are close to receiving NJDEP approval to resume construction. Since they redesigned the building and made a smaller footprint, their original approvals need to be revised.
The biggest disappointment so far was the day we received our State pension bills for 2008 which is $570,670. This is an increase of over 63% from 2007. This year we received only an increase of $23,564 for “Municipal Property Tax Assistance” from the State and can only anticipate receiving the same increase for 2008. It is very frustrating when we add tax ratables, hold the line on operating costs, and make improvements to our town to help our taxpayers and we get hit with a huge bill or an unfunded state mandate we can not control. Wanaque is not alone in this quandary. While your overall property taxes increased by 9.3% over in the past two years, none of that increase came from the municipal government. The Mayor and Council only control the Municipal portion of the Tax Rate. The 2007 Municipal rate remained the same as the 2005 Municipal rate. The increase came partially from the schools and predominately from Passaic County, which was up over 18%. We need meaningful and permanent property tax relief in New Jersey and I will continue to work with our State representatives to make that happen. In the meantime, I look forward to working with every resident in keeping Wanaque a great place to live.

The evening ended with a spectacular display of fireworks which were sponsored by Braen Supply. Once again, thank-you for a great time!

BASS (The Bloomingdale Animal Shelter Society) has been the local shelter for the communities of Butler, Bloomingdale, Pompton Lakes, Riverdale, Ringwood and Wanaque for over 7 years. We have a dedicated volunteer staff, all of whom are committed to finding loving homes for the animals in our care. BASS takes in stray, abandoned and owner surrendered pets and works very hard to place them in new and loving homes. BASS DOES NOT RECEIVE ANY MONEY FROM ANY OF THE SIX TOWNS WE SERVE. We survive solely on donations and membership support. Please help support us so that our work can continue.
