Welcome to The Borough of Wanaque

Welcome to the official website of the Borough of Wanaque, New Jersey, a residential suburban community located in Passaic County. Made up of both Wanaque (formerly Midvale) and Haskell. The word Wanaque, in the language of the Lenni Lenape, may come from an Algonquin root meaning “rest and repose.” A more popular interpretation is “place of sassafras.”
Wanaque was incorporated as an independent Borough on February 23, 1918, when Pompton Township was split up into three Boroughs, along with Bloomingdale and Ringwood, based on the results of a referendum held on March 22, 1918.

POWER OUTAGE ON OCTOBER 21, 2025

Some areas experienced a power outage in Wanaque Borough on October 21, 2025. JCP&L acted quickly to restore the power, which was completed within two hours.

Unfortunately, during Autumn, animals often seek to build nests in electrical equipment. In spite of a multitude of deterrents that JCP&L uses to prevent this from occurring, occasionally animals are still able to enter the equipment. This event was caused by an squirrel entering a recloser and redirecting the current through itself, thereby blowing out the recloser. When a recloser blows out, it cannot redirect power to a different circuit to keep power on continuously, which is why the power was temporarily out.
